Competency-Based Curriculum · KICD · PP1 – Grade 9
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is Kenya's transformative national curriculum, replacing the old 8-4-4 system. CBC focuses on developing core competencies — critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and digital literacy — rather than rote memorisation. Many parents and students find CBC's portfolio-based assessments and new learning area structure unfamiliar. At Lasan, our fully CBC-trained tutors support learners from Pre-Primary through Junior Secondary School (Grade 9).
CBC's emphasis on competencies, portfolios and continuous assessment means students need consistent, guided support — not just exam-time cramming. Our tutors work with learners throughout the year, helping them complete School-Based Assessments (SBAs), build genuine skills, and develop the critical thinking that CBC rewards. We also provide parent briefings so families understand how to support their child at home.
CBC uses School-Based Assessments (SBAs), portfolios and teacher observation. At Grade 9, students transition to Senior Secondary pathways — Arts & Sports Science, Social Sciences, or STEM. Lasan helps students understand all three pathways and make informed choices.
